We had an interesting conversation last night with an old friend who’s been to a few of our installations in the past. She said that she liked coming to our events because we make installations so she can make art, and she liked being an artist for the length of her visit to our spaces. And her comment really resonates with us.

Because that’s what we do.

In all of our work, we want you to be just as much a part of the creation of the art as we are. We want you to direct the flow of what you see, we want you to create your own soundtrack to match your mood, and we want you to have an artistic experience that’s just as unique as you are.

That’s the idea at the heart of SubZeroArts, and that’s what we’ve tried to do with all of our work over the last few years. It’s what we want to do with Pillars of Light and we hope that you’ll want to make art with us when we’re ready to share the experience with you on September 21st.

Pillars of Light

Obligatory sketch on a napkin post

It all begins with a sketch on a napkin...

Here at SubZeroArts we feel very strongly that all great things begin with a sketch on a napkin.  And our latest installation, Pillars of Light is no different…

So to begin the countdown to our debut at Nuit Blanche Ottawa Gatineau, we thought we’d share that sketch on a napkin with you.  It really feels like it’s happening now, doesn’t it?

We hope you’ll join us on Saturday, September 21st, 2013 as “Pillars of Light” makes its debut at Club SAW. Inspired by the beauty of outer space, “Pillars of Light” is a brand new participatory environment designed for NBOG where movement influences a series of illuminated columns within a three dimensional space, creating an active linkage between the audience and their environment through an evolving aural/optical spectacle that evokes nebulae, auroras and other interplanetary phenomena.

We’re really looking forward to seeing you there!

Announcing Pillars of Light!

SubZeroArts presents Pillars of Light!SubZeroArts’ latest light/sound installation “Pillars of Light” makes its debut at Nuit Blanche Ottawa Gatineau on September 21st 2013!

SubZeroArts are very pleased to announce that our latest light/sound installation “Pillars of Light” will make its debut at Club SAW in Ottawa, Ontario on Saturday September 21st, 2013 as part of Nuit Blanche Ottawa Gatineau!

A recurring theme in our work has always been the stimulation of response in multiple modalities, and this year’s theme of SUPERNOVA really inspired us to move our work beyond the idea of a transient canvas into something more substantive, something with a greater physicality. With “Pillars of Light” we’ve designed a much more immersive space where audience members can experience a greater interaction between themselves and their environment as defined through generative light and sound. “Pillars of Light” is a logical extension and development of our past work, and we’re really looking forward to sharing it with all of our friends in Ottawa!

Keep checking back with us over the next few weeks to find out more about “Pillars of Light”, or better yet Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter!

Thanks to all of you for your support!

We’d like to thank all of you for your support over the last month of SubZeroArts Bi-Metropolitan Art Madness (heretofore referred to as SZABAM).  Staging a show is always exciting, but staging two shows in two different cities at the same time is exponentially more exciting!  We had an awesome time and we’re very grateful for all of your support and encouragement.

We’d like to extend a huge round of thanks to our new friends at New Adventures in Sound Arts who very graciously let us present “The Sound is Watching You” at their awesome space!  Darren, Nadene, Mike, and Ian were all fabulously supportive and helpful hosts, and we really enjoyed being able to hear our work in octo-phonic sound!

We’d also like to give a big thank you to our friends at Interactive Arts and SODI Designs, we had a great time collaborating with them on “Icedrops”, and we hope that we’ll have more opportunities to work with them in the future!

But most of all we’d like to thank YOU for coming out to see our shows and for all your encouraging words and support over the last month. There is nothing quite as enjoyable as being able to share our work with you, and we’re thrilled that you all enjoyed it so much!

So what’s up next for SubZeroArts? We can’t say just yet, but rest assured that we’ve already started working on some new projects for you to check out, and we hope to have some new announcements for you soon.  In the meantime you can like us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter to make sure that you’re kept in the loop!

Thanks again, we’ll be seeing you soon!

P.S. SubZeroArts is 100% artist-funded, so if you’d like to support our future work with a monetary donation, we would gladly accept any contribution you might like to make — large or small — with our utmost thanks and gratitude. Visit our donations page to find out more!

If you’re interested in seeing either of SubZeroArts’ current installations in Toronto or Ottawa, we’d just like to remind you that this weekend is your last chance to do so!  Both “The Sound is Watching You” and “Icedrops” end on Monday February 18th, so be sure to check them out if you haven’t already…

The Sound is Watching You” will be open this weekend at the NAISA Space at Artscape Wychwood Barns in Toronto, Ontario on Friday February 15 from 12 to 3pm, on Saturday February 16 from 10-3pm, and on Monday February 18 from 1 to 4pm. “The Sound is Watching You” is a surround-sound and visual experience that responds to audience participation, where audience movement is transformed into a symphony of constantly morphing and re-generating music and light. We’d love to see you there!

Icedrops” is on display this weekend until Monday February 18th as part of the IllumiNation: Outdoor Light Art Gallery at Winterlude 2013 in Ottawa, Ontario.  Co-presented by InteractiveArts, SODI Designs and SubZeroArts, “Icedrops” is an interactive light installation featuring a series of  suspended sculptures that instil a clean opaque architectural beauty during the day, and become bioluminescent light-art during the night. Be sure to dress warmly though, it can get pretty cold out there!

Art in Two Cities at Once

To say the last few weeks have been busy would be an understatement, but we’re very pleased that our installation  “The Sound is Watching You” at the NAISA Space in Toronto and our joint presentation with InteractiveArts and SODI Designs “Icedrops” at the IllumiNation display at Winterlude in Ottawa are both open!  It’s been quite a challenge putting things together for two installations in two cities at once, but we’re thrilled by all the support and encouragement you’ve given us over the last few weeks, and we couldn’t be happier that so many of you are getting the chance to enjoy what we do!

We always like to hear what you think of our work, so if you’ve made it out to see one (or both!) of the shows we’d love to hear what you thought of them! Be sure to send us any pictures or video you might have as well, we might even post them here if you feel like sharing…

If you’re around Toronto and you have the chance to stop by, “The Sound is Watching You”  is on display at the NAISA Space at Artscape Wychwood Barns in Toronto, Ontario, and  runs from January 18th to February 18th, 2013. “The Sound is Watching You” is a surround-sound and visual experience that responds to audience participation, where audience movement is transformed into a symphony of constantly morphing and re-generating music and light. We’d love to see you there!

If you’re in the Ottawa area, “Icedrops” is being presented from February 1st to 18th, 2013, as part of the IllumiNation: Outdoor Light Art Gallery at Winterlude 2013 in Ottawa, Ontario.  Co-presented by InteractiveArts, SODI Designs and SubZeroArts, “Icedrops” is an interactive light installation featuring a series of  suspended sculptures that instil a clean opaque architectural beauty during the day, and become bioluminescent light-art during the night. Be sure to dress warmly, it gets pretty cold out there!

So you’d think that with all this activity going on that we’d be planning on taking a break in the next few weeks after the shows are done.  You’d think that, wouldn’t you?  Actually we’re already planning our next event, and we can’t wait to tell you all about it!

Lighting up the “Icedrops”

We’re happy to report that “Icedrops” has been installed, and the official Winterlude 2013 opening ceremony happens on Friday February 1st at 7pm at Ottawa City Hall (110 Laurier West).  Presented as part of the IllumiNation: Outdoor Light Art Gallery, “Icedrops” will be on display from February 1st to 18th.  Co-presented by InteractiveArts, SODI Designs and SubZeroArts, “Icedrops” is an interactive light installation featuring a series of  suspended sculptures that instil a clean opaque architectural beauty during the day, and become bioluminescent light-art during the night.

We’re thrilled to be a part of this year’s Winterlude event, and we hope that you’ll make a point of including “Icedrops” as part of your Winterlude activities!

InteractiveArts, SODI Designs and SubZeroArts are proud to present “Icedrops” — an interactive light installation that will be on display at Ottawa’s Winterlude 2013 as part of the IllumiNation: Outdoor Light Art Gallery February 1 – 18.

“Icedrops” features a series of large suspended sculptures that instil a clean opaque architectural beauty during the day, and become bioluminescent light-art during the night. SubZeroArts assisted with the light design for the sculptures, and we also provided a soundtrack taken from our installation “LightSoundPlay!“, which we presented at Club Saw in September 2012 as part of Nuit Blanche Ottawa.

We’re very excited to be able to collaborate on “Icedrops” with InteractiveArts and SODI Designs at Winterlude 2013, and we’re thrilled to be able to share this new work with all of our friends in Ottawa!
